Install

  1. Download the installer. It’s a small file that gets the launcher for you. If your browser says the file isn’t commonly downloaded, keep it. In Edge that’s … → Keep → Show more → Keep anyway.
  2. Run it. Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”. Click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Click Install. The installer downloads the latest Zed Launcher from GitHub, checks it and installs it into your user profile, all in one window, without further questions and without admin rights. It then starts the launcher and adds a desktop and Start menu shortcut.
  4. Steam’s Play button. The launcher has an option, on by default, that makes Steam’s Play button for DayZ open Zed Launcher instead of the DayZ launcher. It only changes DayZ’s launch options in Steam. If Steam is running, the launcher restarts it in the background (not while you play or mods download). You can turn it off in the launcher’s Settings → Steam and Discord.

Why Windows warns you

Windows SmartScreen trusts installers based on their code signature and on how many people have downloaded them. Our installer isn’t signed yet, so Windows shows “Unknown publisher”. The warning is about the missing signature, not about anything found in the file. The small installer is the same file for every version, so it doesn’t start from zero with each release.

If you want to be sure the file is ours, compare its SHA-256 checksum with the one on this page. Official downloads are only on zedlauncher.com and on GitHub at wenomcek/zed-launcher-releases.

Verify the installer

Open PowerShell in the folder with the file (usually Downloads) and run:

Get-FileHash .\ZedLauncher-Install.exe -Algorithm SHA256

The Hash value it prints must be exactly the SHA-256 above. If it differs, don’t run the file and let us know.

Full installer

Prefer one file without the small installer? The full installer installs the same launcher without questions. The Steam Play button option is on there too, and you can turn it off in the launcher’s Settings.

What the launcher sends

Only what it needs to work:

  • our server: the server list, a short “still running” signal, the ad slots and featured servers; the address of a server you add manually or that doesn’t respond to the launcher (no data about you),
  • game servers: their status, players and ping,
  • the Steam Workshop: mod versions,
  • GitHub: whether a new launcher version is out,
  • Discord (only if you turn it on in Settings): which server you’re playing on.

It stores no ID on your PC and never sends your in-game name, Steam account or file paths. From those requests our server counts how many launchers run, without storing IP addresses. Details are in the privacy policy.

Updates and older versions

The launcher downloads new versions on its own. Every version, including older ones, is on GitHub Releases.

Uninstall

Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Zed Launcher → Uninstall. Your mods stay in Steam. If you don’t want them, remove them on the launcher’s Mods page before uninstalling.
